The only son of Sir John Nicholl, was born on 21 August 1797. He was educated at Westminster and obtained a studentship at Christ Church, Oxford, in 1816. He took a first class in Classics and (like his father) proceeded to the D.C.L. degree in 1825, and was elected an Advocate of Doctors' Commons in 1826. He was also called to the Bar from Lincoln's Inn in 1824. He was elected member of the first Reform Parliament, for Cardiff, in December 1832, and retained the seat until 1852 when he was defeated. He held several offices. He was lord of the Treasury for a few months in 1835, Master of the Faculties and vicar-general of the province of Canterbury from August 1838 to 1841, became Judge Advocate-General in September 1841, when he was sworn of the Privy Council, an Ecclesiastical Commissioner, and a member of the Board of Trade in January 1846. Locally, he was a deputy-lieutenant and chairman of the Glamorgan quarter sessions. On 14 December 1821 he married Jane Harriet, second daughter of Thomas Mansel Talbot of Margam. He had seven children, and was succeeded in the estate by his eldest son, John Cole Nicholl 1823-1894. He died in Rome on 27 January 1853. The Merthyr Mawr estate is still in the possession of a direct descendant.
