Born at Manchester, of Welsh parents, he set his mind on serving the China Mission under the London Missionary Society. In 1839 he entered the Bala C.M. College. In 1842 was ordained for the newly opened mission field of the Welsh Calvinistic Methodists in India. M. to Mary Roberts, of Towyn, Meironnydd, he arrived on the Khasia Hills in January 1843; he baptised his first converts in 1846. He published a number of books in the Khasi language, completing the translation of the New Testament from Mark to Revelation, and, in conjunction with his wife, issued the Pilgrim's Progress in Khasi. Returning in 1861 in poor health, and unable to undertake any further missionary work, he was for years actively engaged on a revision of the Khasi Scriptures and other Khasi literature. He died at Wrexham, 6 May 1891.
