Born 11 November 1851, at Ty Gwyn, Abercywarch; his parents were Hugh and Elizabeth Davies. His wife, Elizabeth, was of the Breese family of Llanbryn-mair, and his son John Breese Davies was a specialist in cerdd dant.

He was a tailor by trade, and among the houses at which (according to the old-time practice) he worked was the rectory of Llan-ym-Mawddwy in the days of D. Silvan Evans, who greatly fostered his love of literature. He became a book-collector and a writer, contributing frequently to such periodicals as Yr Eurgrawn, Y Traethodydd, and Cymru (O.M.E.); and in 1893 he published a book, Dinas Mawddwy a'i Hamgylchoedd. He died at Dinas Mawddwy 10 December 1924.
